Working together, GSEE participants would build a community of engaged scientists who seek to meld informal education mechanisms with formal education structures. GSEE would create transferrable and scalable programs, demonstrated first at local levels, to increase substantially the level of science literacy for all students and to ensure that more students remain in the science pipeline (1) so that careers in STEM fields remain viable options and (2) until STEM careers are realized. In so doing, GSEE expects to increases dramatically the number of research scientists directly engaged in science education, while increasing their effectiveness as measured by their impact on both students and teachers. A very important collateral benefit would be an increase in public science literacy.
